1 May 2010

After the huge excitement of Thursday, when the British women qualified for today’s Senior Team final in third position, the crowd at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham will be expectant of another thrilling competition and hopefully a successful result for the home team.

Helped by two huge scores on Bars and Floor from Beth Tweddle, Great Britain actually led the field after three rotations ahead of 2008 runners up Russia, who eventually finished in top spot ahead of defending champions Romania. The British team had a few errors on the beam in qualification and there is anticipation that if these can be omitted they could be in with a real chance of a medal, which would be a fantastic result for the British women.

The format of three gymnasts competing and all three scores counting on each piece will be a test of nerve and ability to perform under pressure for all the teams. This format served the Russians well in qualification and Aliya Mustafina, in her first year as a senior, was the star of the show.

France, Italy and the Ukraine can be expected to challenge Great Britain for a medal with Switzerland and the Netherlands making up the eight finalists.
